British GT's Chaplin wants more podiums

Steven Chaplin named Mobil Service Centre Master

Gloucestershire-based Steve Chaplin is looking for another podium this weekend at Silverstone as the double Volkswagen Cup Champion prepares for his second outing in the GT4 class of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship.

Driving the Complete Racing prepared Aston Martin Vantage GT4, Chaplin is this weekend joined by another ex-VW Cup racer, Mike Kurton also from Gloucestershire.  Phil Keen who drove with Chaplin at Snetterton is this weekend driving the GT3 Championship leading Trackspeed Porsche of David Ashburn.

This weekend will be about learning the car still,” said Chaplin. “Mike and I are both new to it really and it will take us a bit of time to find some pace. We’ve got a longer race this weekend and we’re hoping to stay out of trouble, let the other guys have their problems, and hopefully pick up some places again.”

Snetterton brought a lot of positives for the Complete Racing team in their first outing in British GT. A pair of third place finishes and scooping the Mobil Service Centre Master of the Weekend award giving Chaplin the hunger for more, despite a few challenges with their all-white Aston Martin.

“We had a good time at Snetterton, but we’ve been trying to work out why we were down on power; the car felt sluggish and when we tested here recently it again didn’t feel as quick as it should. We’ve got to the route of that problem now, so we should have some speed, but we won’t be the fastest out there.

“It really makes sense us doing this, especially as we’re here anyway with the VWs. There are also some guys in that paddock that are interested in how we’re progressing.”

About to embark on his first weekend in British GT is experienced club racer and Chaplin’s friend, Mike Kurton.

“I’ve been looking at my options this year after doing five or six years of VW. I spoke to Dave (Appleby) about buying and running a car, but I think this is the better option for me for now.”

Action gets underway on Saturday with FP1 at 9am for an hour, followed by FP2 from 11:50. Qualifying takes place at 16:35 til 17:20. A quick ten-minute warm-up on Sunday morning at 9am begins track action, with the three-hour race kicking off at 11:40am.
